About the Portal

The Information Portal for NGOs in Bulgaria was launched in January 2010. It was developed and is maintained by the Program and Analytical Center for European Law Foundation (PACEL) in partnership with the Bulgarian Center for Not-for-Profit Law (BCNL). The portal is a non-commercial project with a charitable mission.

The mission of the NGO Portal is to facilitate and encourage the sharing of up-to-date information about the Bulgarian non-governmental sector that is useful to the organizations themselves, donors, socially responsible businesses, and anyone interested in civil society organizations, their activities, and results. Specifically:

  • We provide Bulgarian civil organizations with a platform where they can freely present themselves without censorship or limitations, helping them reach more supporters, like-minded individuals, and donors.
  • We offer donors and socially responsible businesses the opportunity to promote their goals and programs among active citizens and showcase the results of the people and organizations they support, helping them attract greater public support, partners, and ideas for development.
  • We provide Bulgarian citizens with a “showcase” of active NGOs, with a variety of materials and search capabilities, helping them find causes and organizations whose efforts they wish to support.
  • We offer Bulgarian media and journalists, who follow and report on the activities of civil society organizations, examples of real achievements and challenges, helping them inform the public about diverse civil initiatives in various social fields.

The NGO Portal portal contains the most up-to-date database of NGOs in Bulgaria. Every registered organization can edit its profile and publish materials in various sections—News, Campaigns, Jobs and Volunteering, Announcements, Calendar, etc. Our team and interns also contribute content by covering interesting events, organizations, and causes.

The development of the Portal, including the NGO database, was funded by the Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe. Subsequent financial support was provided by:

  • Charles Stewart Mott Foundation;
  • America for Bulgaria Foundation;
  • Active Citizens Fund under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism;
  • The European Union and Open Society Institute – Sofia (OSI) under the "Rights and Values" project.
